Not Saraswati civilization, etc. Contemporary to Mesopotamia.<\/li>\n<li>Their script is very different, with no matching character<\/li>\n<li>How did it originate? as a result of the growth of preceding civilizations (like from the Stone age to the chalcolithic age)<\/li>\n<li>Why non-Harappan civilization couldn&#8217;t develop as such? not able to produce a surplus, therefore, unable to carry out trade<\/li>\n<li>It was of indigenous origin<\/li>\n<li>Able to prosper because of cultivation techniques (plough irrigation, garbandh [dam to divert water], reservoir): the terracotta model of plough found at Banawali, crossfield found at Kalibangan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Developed in Three Stages<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Early<\/strong> (3,500-2,600 BC)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mature<\/strong> (2,600-1,900 BC)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Late<\/strong> (1,900 &#8211; 1,400 BC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Were Aryans responsible for their decline?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Against<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wheeler: Aryans came from Central Asia, IVC was at North-West, engaged in a fight + their earliest text of Rigveda worshipped a war-god who was known as &#8216;Purandra&#8217; (destroyer of towns)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>For<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Aryans never invaded India. They came in groups in waves.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How did Mohenjodaro Decline? Possible reasons<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Floods: flooding evidence is present but this can&#8217;t be representative as there is no such evidence in other towns<\/li>\n<li>Epidemic: no evidence of the large-scale epidemic<\/li>\n<li>Tectonic factor:<br \/>\n&#8211; Earthquake led to change in course of river Saraswati<br \/>\n&#8211; Many towns of the Harappan civilization were around this river<br \/>\n&#8211; Migration and fragmentation led to the dying out of the civilization<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Town_Architecture\"><\/span><strong>Town Architecture<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Upper Town (higher ground; presence of &#8216;citadel&#8217;)<\/li>\n<li>Lower Towns<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Features<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Grid System (road cutting at right angles)<\/li>\n<li>Main roads are thicker, some are thinner<\/li>\n<li>The main gate on small roads<\/li>\n<li>Courtyards<\/li>\n<li>Almost all houses have a bathing place (made of burnt bricks)<\/li>\n<li>Private toilet<\/li>\n<li>Wells<\/li>\n<li>Drainage system (covered with loose bricks)<\/li>\n<li>Used maximum no. of burnt bricks<\/li>\n<li>All bricks have similar dimensions (1:1:4)<\/li>\n<li>The Great Bath: water retention capability, stairs + might have been used for rituals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Important_Cities_of_IVC\"><\/span><strong>Important Cities of IVC<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mohenjodaro<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Seals (important: Pashupati seal)<br \/>\n&#8211; Bronze sculpture of &#8216;dancing girl&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8211; The stone sculpture of the bearded man<br \/>\n&#8211; Evidence of cotton<br \/>\n&#8211; Great Bath<br \/>\n&#8211; Great granary (biggest structure in Mohenjodaro)<br \/>\n&#8211; The maximum no. of wells<\/li>\n<li><strong>Harappa<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Barrack-like structure near granary (could be workers quarters for rest)<br \/>\n&#8211; Coffin burial<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kalibangan<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Double cropping<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dholavira<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Only town to be divided into three parts<br \/>\n&#8211; Evidence of a reservoir (could be for water management)<br \/>\n&#8211; Stadium (ground with steps around)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lothal<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Dockyard<br \/>\n&#8211; Found Persial seal<br \/>\n&#8211; Centre for bead making<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sanauli<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Grave of a warrior has been found (helmet + sword + chariot)<br \/>\n&#8211; Some say the warrior belonged to post-Harappan phase as the Harappans were peaceful<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Harappan Burial System<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Most common: extended burial<br \/>\n&#8211; person buried in the pit on their back<br \/>\n&#8211; North-South orientation<\/li>\n<li>Symbolic burial: Kalibangan<br \/>\n&#8211; buried with a pot, where personal items were kept<br \/>\n&#8211; belief in the afterlife?<\/li>\n<li>Lothal&#8217;s twin burial<\/li>\n<li>No evidence of cremation has been found. (could happen)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Harappan_Life\"><\/span><strong>Harappan Life<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Political<\/strong>: divided State, ruled by the different mercantile class<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social<\/strong>: maintained by different specialised groups (masons\/traders\/peasants\/transporters)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Economic<\/strong> inequality was present: some houses were large, some small<\/li>\n<li>Items excavated: bangles &amp; anklets, terracotta female figurines, a copper mirror, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Were Harappans secular? no evidence of conflict b\/w traditions followed many traditions<\/li>\n<li>Worshipped mother goddess<\/li>\n<li>Pashupati seal has been found<\/li>\n<li>They worshipped trees and animals<\/li>\n<li>Ritual bathing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Economic_Life\"><\/span><strong>Economic Life<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Agriculture<\/strong>:<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>crops known<\/strong>: wheat, rice, millet, barley, rice and cotton; led very healthy lives, no evidence of malnourishment<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trade<\/strong>: maximum trade was with Mesopotamia (called Harappas &#8216;Meluha&#8217;): Harappan seals found in Mesopotamia<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Gold<\/strong>: Central Asia<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Tin<\/strong> (important for Bronze): Afghanistan<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Semi-precious stones<\/strong>: Afghanistan (Lapis Lazuli)<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Silver<\/strong>: Mesopotamia<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Copper<\/strong>: Khetri mines (Rajasthan)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Harappan_Art_Crafts\"><\/span><strong>Harappan Art &amp; Crafts<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One of the special features of IVC was well-organised and <strong>highly specialized art &amp; crafts<\/strong>. Harappan artists made beautiful objects using different kinds of materials using metal, stone, terracotta, ivory, sea shells<\/p>\n<p>They used gold and silver largely for jewellery. Copper was used for arrowheads and axes. Bronze being the most important metal used in sculptures, with &#8216;dancing girl&#8217; (Mohenjodaro) being an example. The sculptures were using &#8216;lost was technique&#8217; (India was the first to use this method.<\/p>\n<p>They also <strong>had knowledge of alloys<\/strong>. Most Bronze articles were found in Daimabad.<\/p>\n<p>Harappans were also familiar with drilling tech, as witnessed from their beads making technique.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seals were made of steatite<\/strong> (soft stone), using integlio technique.\u00a0The most common animal represented was unicorn (humpless bull). The animals not represented were cow, camel, lion and horse.<\/p>\n<p>Terracotta pottery was also widespread. Many terracotta articles were found like perforated jars, conical jars, terracotta peacock, etc.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Harappan_Script\"><\/span><strong>Harappan Script<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Script not yet deciphered<\/li>\n<li>400 letters (therefor, speculated that they were difficult to be alphabetic unlike English + also could not be pictographic because too few letters to be pictographic, Chinese pictographic script had 2,000 pictures)<\/li>\n<li>Therefore, the script could be<strong> logo-syllabic\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Direction of writing<\/strong>: right to left<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harappan Civilization The only acceptable nomenclatures are Harappan civilization and Indus Valley Civilization.
