Controversies riddled the beginning phases \u2013 ever since Qatar won the bid to be the organizing nation.\u00a0<i>This was the first post COVID world cup to be ever held , the first World cup ever held by a middle eastern nation , that too during the winter \u2013 breaking the tradition of the past world cups \u2013 where monsoon seemed to be the season of choice.<\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Legacy_Matters_Or_Does_It\"><\/span><strong>Legacy Matters, Or Does It?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Pick any prior FIFA WC and you\u2019ll find one thing constant \u2013 each organizing nation has a rich history of football \u2013 be it 2014 Brazil , 2010 RSA and 2002 South Korea Japan. So when the present FIFA president\u00a0<i><b>Gianni Infantino<\/b><\/i>\u00a0made it clear during the final announcement that the authority is willing to give Qatar \u2013 a desert country in the Middle East a chance , a few eyebrows were raised \u2013 as to a lot of the skeptics \u2013 it\u2019s the Arab Dirham that did the trick. This is particularly significant as\u00a0<i><b>FIFA ex president Sepp Blatter had to leave his office under the allegation of financial opacity \u2013 and under Gianni Infantino \u2013 FIFA was supposed to be completely free of external financial manipulation \u2013 something that seemed absent as Qatar became the host nation of the FIFA WC.<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Infrastructure_Woes\"><\/span><strong>Infrastructure Woes<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Organizing the\u00a0<i><b>Greatest show on Earth<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is never an easy task and as the ball was set rolling on Dec 2021 \u2013 Qatar found itself lacking in infrastructure \u2013 be it transportational , logistical and the worst of all \u2013 even the stadiums were horribly below the mark for hosting International Level matches. The turfs were torn and rough , the galleries a deathbed due to the architectural mismanagement , the sanitation inside the athlete and even the guest village abysmal. Qatar had suddenly , a lot to do , in a very short span of time. Ardent football buffs will resonate with me as I recall an incident : only 7 days before the Grand Opening Ceremony \u2013 the Athlete\u2019s Hotel was still under construction. Such was the level of mismanagement.\u00a0<i><b>Making stadiums out of shipping containers and disposable bucket seats \u2013 are somethings that are both amusing and alarming \u2013 given that FWC is the greatest advertisement a country can has for itself.<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Migrant_Labor_Crisis_The_Human_Rights_Conundrum\"><\/span><strong>Migrant Labor Crisis : The Human Rights Conundrum<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Now this is the most significant controversy \u2013 that rocked the world.\u00a0Qatar \u2013 like a lot of Gulf and Middle Eastern countries relies mainly on countries like India , Bangladesh , Pakistan and Nepal for its supply of cheap labour \u2013 and subhuman treatment of migrant labourers has always been a soft nerve to touch \u2013 a wound that exacerbated during the building spree of the FIFA WC \u2013 labour demand was the highest and with cramped up living spaces , inhuman working conditions and minimal wage law frequently flouted \u2013 the Human Rights had to step in \u2013 some NGOs even urging to boycott the world cup \u2013 as death toll among labourers reached an all time high \u2013 earning the moniker \u201c BloodSport \u201c. Divided by nations , united by their love for football \u2013 has been the recurrent theme. Well , had been.<\/p>\n<p>As a country , Qatar is very rigid with its customs \u2013\u00a0<i><b>banning rainbow coloured armbands and prohibiting sale of Alcohol just one day before the start of the world cup being one of them. Budweiser and Amstel Breweries \u2013 the major sponsors of FIFA were shocked with the decision \u2013 as it put millions of dollars of sale at stake. Budweiser even issued a tweet \u2013 \u201c Well , this is awkward .. \u201c<\/b><\/i>\u00a0something that sparked outrage not only among spectators but also among the companies who suddenly were skeptical about Qatar\u2019s administration.
