{"id":6304,"date":"2021-03-13T11:59:03","date_gmt":"2021-03-13T11:59:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iquanta.in\/blog\/?p=6304"},"modified":"2022-02-13T23:02:48","modified_gmt":"2022-02-13T17:32:48","slug":"citizenship-amendment-act-caa-nrc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iquanta.in\/blog\/citizenship-amendment-act-caa-nrc\/","title":{"rendered":"Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA-NRC)\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><b>What is the CAA?<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CAA, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; background-color: #ffff00;\">Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, and Parsi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> migrants<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who have entered India illegally-that is, without a visa-on or before <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">December 31,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Muslim-majority countries of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bangladesh and have stayed in the country for five years, are eligible to apply for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian citizenship.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is the provision extended only to people of six religions, and not<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muslims, and why does it apply only to people coming from these three<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">countries?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union government claims that people of these six faiths have faced<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persecution in these three Islamic countries, Muslims haven&#8217;t. It is,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">therefore, India&#8217;s moral obligation to provide them shelter.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So, is the provision open only to those who have been persecuted in the<\/b> <b>three countries?<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, the CAA itself does not mention the word &#8216;persecution&#8217; anywhere<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, contrary to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the BJP&#8217;s assertion that the act covers only persecuted people. And since<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persecution is not the criterion, it does discriminate against illegal Muslim<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immigrants from these three countries.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If the act is not only about people facing persecution, why are migrants<\/b> <b>from other countries &#8212; such as Hindus from Sri Lanka &#8212; not eligible to<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>apply for citizenship under this act? Or Muslim (Rohingya) migrants from<\/b> <b>Myanmar?<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government says this is a time-bound provision to provide relief to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immigrants who have suffered in Islamic countries because India got divided on<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">religious lines. India has, from time to time, provided citizenship to immigrants of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all religions from different countries. Sri Lankan Tamil Hindus, too, were given<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">citizenship in the 1970s and 1980s.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union government has openly said that the Rohingyas are a threat to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national security. Even an Islamic country like Saudi Arabia has deported<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rohingya migrants. The BJP&#8217;s logic is that Hindu migrants have only India to fall<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back on while Muslim migrants have several Islamic countries to seek shelter in.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Is it not unconstitutional and against India&#8217;s secular ethos to discriminate<\/b> <b>on religious lines?<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sixty-five writ petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legal validity of the CAA. The apex court has asked the Union government to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respond by the second week of January. Constitutional expert Subhash Kashyap<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says there are arguments both in favour of and against the act.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Article 14 says that all persons are entitled to equality, but there have been<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several Supreme Court judgments which say that reasonable classification can<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be applied to this principle of equality. Even all fundamental rights are subject to<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reasonable classification. Anyone can challenge the act in the apex court and the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">future of the act will depend on whether the Supreme Court accepts the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">classification made within this act as reasonable enough,&#8221; he says.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(UPDATE: No hearing has happened since the last one year)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we need this new provision? Don&#8217;t we have enough provisions to<\/b> <b>offer citizenship to outsiders &#8212; Adnan Sami, for example?<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, we do have, but they are applicable only to those who have entered<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India legally, that is, with a valid visa. Sami was in India legally.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illegal immigrants-who cross the border without any paperwork-can&#8217;t apply<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for citizenship and, when caught, face prosecution. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is among the few<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">countries in the world that has neither a national refugee protection<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">framework nor an immigration policy.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also not a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention or its 1967<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protocol. India has also not ratified the 1954 UN Convention on<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statelessness or the 1961 UN Convention on Reduction of Statelessness.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is under no obligation, therefore, to provide rights set out in the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conventions to refugees. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes decisions on granting long-term visas to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refugees essentially on an ad hoc basis.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, while refugees from neighboring countries (barring Myanmar)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can seek protection directly from the government and are issued<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documentation by the Foreigner Regional Registration Officers (FRROs),<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-neighboring countries and Myanmar come under the UNHCR<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mandate that assesses each individual asylum claim and issues an ID card<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to those recognized as refugees after seeking biometric data for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">registration, followed by a comprehensive interview by a UNHCR officer.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The whole process takes anywhere between six months and a year. The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">government currently allows refugees, including Rohingya, with UNHCR<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IDs to apply for a &#8220;long-term visa&#8221;, which the government issues on a case<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by case basis. However, this doesn&#8217;t make them Indian citizens.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why is Assam protesting against the CAA?<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though this legislation covers refugees from three countries, the indigenous<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people of Assam fear it will primarily benefit illegal Bengali Hindu migrants from<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bangladesh who have settled in large numbers across the state.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assamese fear that if citizenship is granted to Bangla-speaking Hindu<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immigrants from Bangladesh, they will outnumber Assamese-speaking people in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the state. They cite the example of Tripura, where Bengali-speaking Hindu<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migrants from Bangladesh now dominate political power, pushing the original<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tribal population to the margins.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike in the rest of India, where people are questioning the exclusion of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muslims, the Assamese don&#8217;t want immigrants of any religion, whether Hindu or<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muslim.(vvvvv imp. Remember, Assam\u2019s fight isn\u2019t communal, they want to drive<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out illegal immigrants, be it Hindus or Muslims)(If CAA is implemented, Hindu<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illegal immigrants will be given citizenship and the local Assamese do not want<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ASSAM NRC\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assam NRC has a different historical context. The first NRC in Assam was<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prepared in 1951, owing to widespread allegations of massive, unabated illegal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immigration from Bangladesh. The first NRC was published by recording the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particulars of all the persons enumerated in that year&#8217;s census. The 1951 NRC<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that nearly 1.5 million illegal immigrants-one-sixth of Assam&#8217;s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">population-lived in the state. However, there is no account of what happened to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those illegal immigrants.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three decades later, at the end of a six-year-long agitation in Assam against<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, the Union government and student leaders<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed the Assam Accord in 1985<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As part of the accord, the 1951 NRC would be<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">updated. That&#8217;s why people residing in Assam were asked to provide documents<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">showing their connection to those whose names appeared in the 1951 NRC.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assam Accord accepted any illegal migrant entering the state before March<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25, 1971<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.(It had no religious bias) But anyone entering after the specified date<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would fail to qualify as an Indian. However, there were delays and delays and no<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">government actually brought out a comprehensive NRC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iquanta.in\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7740 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.iquanta.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-12-16-at-4.09.20-PM-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"518\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iquanta.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-12-16-at-4.09.20-PM-1.jpeg 1280w, https:\/\/www.iquanta.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-12-16-at-4.09.20-PM-1-300x57.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.iquanta.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-12-16-at-4.09.20-PM-1-1024x194.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.iquanta.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-12-16-at-4.09.20-PM-1-768x145.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.iquanta.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-12-16-at-4.09.20-PM-1-640x121.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.iquanta.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-12-16-at-4.09.20-PM-1-681x129.jpeg 681w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>LATEST NRC IN ASSAM<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under an SC bench headed by the then Chief Justice, Ranjan Gogi, an NRC was<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carried out in Assam in 2019. The widespread fears of mass illegal immigration<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell flat when only 1.9 million people were excluded from the final NRC from a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">total population of 31 million. Even among those 1.9 million, there were a lot of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discrepancies like out of a family, a few people making it to the list, and a few not<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making it. Thus, the NRC process in Assam was an absolute logistical nightmare.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 1.9 million people excluded from the NRC, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.3 million are Hindu and from<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indigenous tribes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as unofficial sources confirm. That also explains why the BJP<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has rejected the NRC in Assam<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(This shows that a majority of illegal immigrants in Assam belong to the Hindu<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community)(The CAA will protect all these Hindu illegal immigrants, but not the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remaining Muslim illegal immigrants)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assamese are unhappy because they do not want people to be declared illegal on religious grounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assamese want the NRC, but not the CAA which provides refuge and citizenship to the 1.3 million Hindu illegal Hindu immigrants living in Assam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, the CAA is antithetical to the Assam Accord, which was completely secular in nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How is the CAA connected to the NRC?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two have no connection. The NRC is a count of legitimate Indian citizens.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barring the state of Assam, this exercise has never been done anywhere in the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">country. So, the two have no connection per se.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the home minister of India, Amit Shah stoked controversy by saying<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that an all-India NRC would be carried by 2024, and he said it in conjunction with<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the CAA.(The famous or rather infamous \u201cchronology\u201d statement)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has led many Indian Muslims to believe that when an all-India NRC is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carried out, Hindus are by default protected by the CAA, and the burden of<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proving citizenship rests solely on the Muslims. This was widely seen as an Anti-Muslim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0measure by a section of the Indian and the global press.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>But the CAA does exclude Muslims.<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CAA excludes Muslim immigrants who have entered India illegally, not legal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Muslim citizens. (but citizens had reasons to worried too, because a lot of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s poor citizens might not have documents)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, since the CAA will provide citizenship to non-Muslim illegal immigrants<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from three countries, only Muslim immigrants will be left out when the NRC is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rolled out.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Is it not a clever way for the RSS-BJP to realize their dream of a Hindu<\/b> <b>Rashtra?<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partly true. The CAA will provide citizenship to illegal non-Muslim migrants from<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three countries and who have entered India before December 31, 2014. An<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">honest NRC should exclude illegal migrants of all religions. That, however, will<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depend on the intent of the government and a framework that is flawless, a huge<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">challenge for Amit Shah.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is nothing wrong per se with the exercise of detecting illegal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migrants-irrespective of their religion-but to discriminate on the basis of religion is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">against India&#8217;s secular ethos, especially when the CAA does not specify that it<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will cover people who have faced religious persecution.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do we really need an all India NRC?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On paper, there is nothing wrong with counting the legal citizenry of the country.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if it becomes a basis for discrimination or put to other uses, then it is certainly<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">problematic. Besides, it will be an enormous exercise given the size of our<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">population and other complexities.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was evident in Assam, where even genuine Indian citizens got excluded and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many illegal migrants allegedly, got included. Before the government embarks on<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this exercise, it also needs to put in place a policy on stateless people. India does<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not have one yet, and keeping illegal migrants in detention centers is something<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the country can ill afford.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>PROTESTS AGAINST CAA-NRC<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">led to widespread protests all over the country. Eminent intellectuals, activists,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">select actors, students showed their dissent against the law. The protests, even<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">though dominated by Muslims, had a large number of people from other religions<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ASSAM:<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assam saw widespread protests against the CAA because it gave protection to a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large number of illegal Hindu immigrants, thus violating the Assam Accord. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important to understand that Assam\u2019s reasons for a protest were different from<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that of the rest of the country. Assam wanted the implementation of the NRC,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without any religious bias, while protesters across other parts of India vehemently<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expressed their dissent against the CAA-NRC duo.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students, intellectuals, poets came together on the streets in Assam, where the protests did turn violent, and 7 people were allegedly killed in police firing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>REST OF THE COUNTRY:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most parts of the country saw widespread protests and demonstrations, against a law that was seen to be the final nail in the coffin of a secular India. It would be fair to say that Uttar Pradesh and Delhi were the epicenter of the protests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shaheen Bagh sit-in protest by Muslim women and children went on for over 100 days before Covid 19 struck and social distancing norms had to be enforced. Shaheen Bagh made global headlines and was seen as one of the greatest protests in the history of independent media, led by Muslim women and children, braving it out in the freezing cold of Delhi winters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>GOVT CRACKDOWN ON PROTESTORS\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government had clearly failed to assuage the feelings of the Muslim community, which had reason to believe that the law was discriminatory. Instead of understanding the fears and concerns of the protestors, the government went on to delegitimize the protests, with several BJP functionaries using words like \u201cMini Pakistan\u201d, \u201cJihadis\u201d, and \u201cAnti-Nationals\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from that, the government cracked the whip on the protestors with the help of the police. Over 50 people were killed in police firing in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Assam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The police also used its brute force to enter universities like the Jamia Millia Islamia and the Aligarh Muslim University to allegedly beat up peacefully protesting students.
