On April 29, 2011, a month after the first protests in <\/span>Syria<\/span> that were met with brutal force by the<\/span> government, Washington imposes sanctions on several Syrian officials.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The measures extend to President <\/span>Bashar al-Assad<\/span> the following month.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span>ugust 2011: President Barack Obama calls on Assad to resign and orders Syrian government<\/span> assets frozen.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In August 2013, the Syrian government is accused of carrying out a chemical attack near<\/span> Damascus that killed more than 1,400 people, according to Washington.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite having promised to act with force if Syria crossed the chemical weapons \u201cred line\u201d,<\/span> Obama at the last minute pulls back from punitive strikes on regime infrastructure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, on September 14, he agrees to a deal with Moscow \u2013 Assad\u2019s main backer \u2013 that is<\/span> meant to dismantle Syria\u2019s chemical weapons arsenal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On September 23, 2014, the US and Arab allies launch air raids in Syria against the Islamic State<\/span> of Iraq and the Levant (<\/span>ISIL<\/span> or ISIS) group, expanding a campaign underway in neighboring<\/span> Iraq<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The biggest contributor to the coalition, Washington deploys 2,000 soldiers, mostly special<\/span> forces.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In October 2015, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-Syrian Arab alliance of some<\/span> 50,000 fighters, is created with US backing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dominated by the Kurdish People\u2019s Protection Units (YPG) militia, it receives US training and<\/span> aid in the form of arms, air support, and intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump orders strikes<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

On April 7, 2017, US forces fire a barrage of cruise missiles at Syria\u2019s Shayrat airbase, believed to<\/span> b<\/span>e the launch site of a chemical attack that killed 88 people in Idlib province.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the first direct US action against Assad\u2019s government and President <\/span>Donald Trump<\/span>\u2018s most<\/span> significant military decision since taking office in January 2017.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On April 14, 2018, the US \u2013 with the support of France and the UK \u2013 launches new retaliatory<\/span> attacks after an alleged government chemical attack on the then rebel-held town of Douma, in<\/span> w<\/span>hich some 40 people were killed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Withdrawal announced<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

On December 19, 2018, Trump announces that all of the roughly 2,000 US troops in Syria will<\/span> b<\/span>e withdrawn because ISIL had been \u201cdefeated\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The surprise decision prompts Secretary of Defense James Mattis to resign and is met with<\/span> concern by France, the UK and Germany, but praise from Russia and Turkey.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On January 16, 2019, a suicide attack claimed by ISIL kills four US servicemen and 15 others at a<\/span> restaurant in Syria\u2019s northern city of Manbij.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the deadliest attack against US forces since they deployed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On August 7, Turkish and US officials agree to jointly manage a buffer zone between the Turkish<\/span> b<\/span>order and areas in Syria controlled by the YPG, which Istanbul considers a \u201cterrorist\u201d threat.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

US steps aside<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

But on October 6, Washington announces that US forces would withdraw from the border areas<\/span> to make way for a \u201clong-planned operation\u201d by Turkish forces.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The following day, President <\/span>Recep Tayyip Erdogan<\/span> confirms that Turkish action against<\/span> Kurdish fighters in Syria is imminent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s pullback decision <\/span>provokes an uproar<\/span> in Washington, with several of his close allies<\/span> calling on him to reconsider.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Pentagon says it does \u201cnot endorse\u201d a Turkish operation in northern Syria, while a senior<\/span> State Department official says the US has pulled back a \u201cvery small number\u201d of troops from<\/span> areas along the border.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In an <\/span>extraordinary warning<\/span> via Twitter, Trump says he will \u201cobliterate\u201d Turkey\u2019s economy if<\/span> A<\/span>nkara does anything he considers \u201coff-limits\u201d in Syria.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Islamic Republic of Iran <\/span>and the <\/span>Syrian Arab Republic <\/span>are <\/span>close strategic allies<\/span>, and Iran has<\/span> provided significant support for the <\/span>Syrian government <\/span>in the <\/span>Syrian Civil War<\/span>, including logistical,<\/span> technical, and financial support, as well as training and some combat troops. Iran sees the survival of<\/span> the Syrian government as being crucial to its regional interests.<\/span>\u00a0When the uprising <\/span>developed into the Syrian Civil War, there were increasing reports of Iranian military support, and of<\/span> Iranian training of the <\/span>National Defence Forces <\/span>both in Syria and Iran<\/span><\/p>\n

26.02.21 President Joe Biden on Thursday directed US military airstrikes in<\/span> eastern Syria against facilities belonging to what the Pentagon said were<\/span> Iran-backed militia, in a calibrated response to rocket attacks against U.S. targets<\/span> in Iraq.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The strikes, which were first reported by Reuters, appeared to be limited in<\/span> scope, potentially lowering the risk of escalation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Biden’s decision to strike only in Syria and not in Iraq, at least for now, also gives<\/span> the Iraqi government some breathing room as it carries out its own investigation<\/span> of a Feb. 15 attack that wounded Americans.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“At President (Joe) Biden\u2019s direction, U.S. military forces earlier this evening<\/span> conducted airstrikes against infrastructure utilized by Iranian-backed militant<\/span> groups in eastern Syria,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“President Biden will act to protect American and Coalition personnel. At the<\/span> same time, we have acted in a deliberate manner that aims to de-escalate the<\/span> overall situation in both eastern Syria and Iraq,” Kirby said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He added that the strikes destroyed multiple facilities at a border control point<\/span> used by a number of Iranian-backed militant groups, including Kata’ib Hezbollah<\/span> (KH) and Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada (KSS).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The rocket attacks on U.S. positions in Iraq were carried out as Washington and<\/span> Tehran are looking for a way to return to the 2015 nuclear deal abandoned by<\/span> former U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was not clear how, or whether, the strike might affect U.S. efforts to coax Iran<\/span> back into a negotiation about both sides resuming compliance with the<\/span> agreement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Feb. 15 attack, rockets hit the U.S. military base housed at Erbil<\/span> International Airport in the Kurdish-run region, killing one non-American<\/span> contractor and injuring a number of American contractors and a U.S. service<\/span> member.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another salvo struck a base hosting U.S. forces north of Baghdad days later,<\/span> hurting at least one contractor.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rockets hit Baghdad\u2019s Green Zone on Monday, which houses the U.S. Embassy<\/span> and other diplomatic missions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the Kata’ib Hezbollah group, one of the main Iran-aligned Iraqi<\/span> militia groups, denied any role in the rocket attacks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some Western and Iraqi officials say the attacks, often claimed by little-known<\/span> groups, are being carried out by militants with links to Kata’ib Hezbollah as a way<\/span> for Iranian allies to harass U.S. forces without being held accountable.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since late 2019, the United States has carried out high-profile strikes against the<\/span> Kata’ib Hezbollah militia group in Iraq and Syria in response to sometimes deadly<\/span> rocket attacks against U.S.-led forces.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the Trump administration, the escalators back-and-forth stoked tensions,<\/span> culminating in the U.S. killing of Iranian military leader Qassem Soleimani and a<\/span> retaliatory Iranian ballistic missile attack against U.S. forces in Iraq last year.<\/span><\/p>\n
