It refused to recognize Israel as a country. It has<\/span> received support from <\/span>Iran and Syria<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
- On the other hand, <\/span>Fatah<\/b>, a faction of PLO under Yasser Arafat received support<\/span> from Western nations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Israel-Palestine conflict and US<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n\n- The US has been playing a significant role as the mediator in the Israel-Palestine.<\/span> However, its credibility as a mediator had long been questioned by Palestinians.<\/span> The United States has been criticized by the OIC (Organization of Islamic<\/span> cooperation) and other Arab organizations, <\/span>for vetoing most Security Council<\/b> decisions critical of Israel<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
- Note: The USA has more Jews than Israel. Jews have significant control over US<\/span> media and the economy.<\/span><\/li>\n
- Also, Israel receives about $3 billion in direct foreign assistance each year, which<\/span> is roughly one-fifth of America\u2019s entire foreign aid budget.<\/span><\/li>\n
- On the other side, United States has been vocal about its intention to veto any<\/span> Palestinian bid for statehood. Due to which Palestine had to be satisfied with a<\/span> \u2018<\/span>non-member observer<\/b>\u00a0status in UN.<\/span><\/li>\n
- However, the second term of the Obama administration saw a degrading US-Israel<\/span> relationship. Iran Nuclear deal of 2015 irritated Israel and it criticized the US for<\/span> the deal.<\/span><\/li>\n
- Obama administration allowed the United Nations to pass a resolution that<\/span> declared Israel\u2019s growing settlements in the occupied territories illegal. Until that<\/span> vote, the Obama administration had blocked resolutions criticizing Israel by using<\/span> its veto power in the UN Security Council.<\/span><\/li>\n
- With the new presidency regime under Trump, who is more inclined to Israel, the<\/span> illegal settlements by Israel in West Bank and Gaza may see a rise.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
What does Palestine want?<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n\n- They want Israeli to withdraw to pre-1967 borders and establish an independent<\/span> Palestine state in West Bank and Gaza.<\/span><\/li>\n
- Israel should stop all expansion of settlements before coming to peace talks.<\/span> \u25cf <\/span>Palestine wants Palestine refugees who lost their homes in 1948 to be able to come<\/span> back.<\/span><\/li>\n
- Palestine wants <\/span>East Jerusalem <\/b>as the capital of the Independent Palestine state.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
What does Israel want?<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n\n- Sovereignty over <\/span>Jerusalem<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
- Recognition of Israel as a Jewish State. Note: Israel is the only country in the world<\/span> created for a religious community.<\/span><\/li>\n
- The right of return of Palestine refugees only to Palestine and not to Israel.<\/span> \u25cf<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
What is so special with Jerusalem?<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
Jerusalem is a city that straddles the border between Israel and the West Bank. It\u2019s home to<\/span> some of the holiest sites in both Judaism and Islam, and so both Israel and Palestine want to<\/span> make it their cap the solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe solution for the Israel-Palestine conflict<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n\n- The best solution is a <\/span>\u201ctwo-state solution\u201d <\/b>that would establish Palestine as an<\/span> independent state in Gaza and most of the West Bank, leaving the rest of the land<\/span> to Israel. Though the two-state plan is clear in theory, the two sides are still deeply<\/span> divided over how to make it work in practice.<\/span><\/li>\n
- A one-state solution (only Palestine or only Israel) is not a viable option.<\/span> \u25cf <\/span>Road Map for Peace: <\/b>The European Union, UN, US, and Russia had released a road<\/span> map in 2003, which outlined a clear timetable towards a Palestinian state.<\/span> \u25cf <\/span>The democratization of the Palestinian society through which a new credible<\/span> leadership can emerge is necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n
- The need of the hour is to treat this conflict as an <\/span>Israeli-Arab conflict <\/b>rather<\/span> Israel-Palestine. As we have seen, conflict is not only between Israel and Palestine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
but also with other Arab countries such as Egypt, Jordan, Iran, Syria, etc. All of<\/span> them should participate in the negotiations and the final agreement should be<\/span> recognized formally by each one of them along with the UN general assembly and<\/span> security council.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
