Why CAT Feels So Tough?
Before diving into tips and strategies, Pradeep begins by addressing a common fear among aspirants, “Why CAT seems so unpredictable and difficult?”.
- Unpredictability: There is no fixed syllabus or question pattern. Every slot in CAT feels like a surprise.
- Logic-Driven: CAT isn’t a formulae-based exam. It requires logical reasoning and pattern recognition, making shortcuts and tricks largely ineffective.
He suggested that CAT aspirants do not need to feel intimidated by all of these. With the right approach and consistent practice, even predictable challenges can be tamed.
Step-by-Step Strategy to Crack CAT in 4 Months
Pradeep shares step-by-step strategies for those who have just started their CAT preparation from scratch. Here’s how you can begin:
Start with the Baiscs – Especially in LRDI
- When starting from scratch, begin with commonly asked LRDI sets like Arrangements, Venn Diagrams, Puzzles, Bar Graphs, Line Charts, Pie Charts, Histograms (for DI).
- Aspirants must focus on easy sets first to build the foundation and the confidence. Once you are comfortable, gradually move to moderate to difficult topics. Pardeep said, “Don’t ignore Data Interpretation (DI). It might seem scary at first, but most DI sets are straightforward once you solve few basic ones.”
Work on Calculation Speed
- Pradeep insisted that aspirants do not forget to work on the calculation speed. It will not only helps in solving DI or LR faster but it will also helps in smart option elimination.
- Use mental math tricks, approximation techniques, and everyday calculations to improve your speed.
Shift to Moderate & Difficult Sets
- Once the basics are in place, aspirants must move to tougher sets. Pardeep suggested that at first do not use timer, instead try to solve the set on your own and if stuck somewhere, analyze the logic used in the solution and compare the same with your thought process.
- He recommended iQuanta’s LRDI Incpetion Module as he himself use this resource for his CAT 2024 preparation. These LRDI Inception module has really difficult sets and some may even take 70 to 80 minutes to solve. But do not quit, he added.
Start Taking Mocks and Sectionals

- If you are new to puzzles, Pradeep mentioned that solving Sudo-ku everyday helps you in logical building and pattern recognition.
Develop Test-Taking Strategy
- For test-taking strategies, Pradeep has come up with two different approaches. The first strategy is to take 4-5 minutes to quickly scan all the sets inthat paper and try to shortlist them based on their difficulty level and start solving easy one first.
- And, the second strategy is to take 1-2 minutes to quickly scan at the first two sets and try pick the one that seems doable sets. He added that it is not easy to differentiate between easy, moderate, and difficult sets at first but with enough practice and exposure to different type of sets, you will be able to get that instinct on your own. It will surly not happen overnight, it will take time and consistent practice.
- Aspirants must aim to complete 2 sets within the first 15-20 minutes in sectional or mock which will help you in staying calm, consistent, and focused for the rest of the section.
Avoid This Common Mistakes
- The biggest mistake many CAT aspirants do during their CAT preparation is getting stuck at single set. Most of the aspirants think that if they are spending 10 to 15 minutes in a set, you will be surely cracking CAT exam.
- But the harsh truth as per Pradeep is if you are not making progress after spending 4-5 minutes in the set, just leave it and don’t let your ego ruin your time management. Try to move on to another set and come back to it of time permits.
The Game-Changer – Mock Analysis
- Many aspirants neglect analysis after giving mocks, and this is where real improvement happens. Whenever you take mocks or sectional, analysis is very important to learn form your mistakes, to know your weaker sections, to know calculation mistake, a reading error as the or the approach itself is wrong.
- Always try to analyze what logic you missed that the solution used. This reflective analysis helps in building logical thinking, time management and better set selections. Pradeep said, “Solving is practice and Analysis is improvement. Don’t skip it.”
