When You Don’t Know 3 Questions in a Row
When you don’t know the answer to the first question, you may mention to the panel that ‘you are not aware, or don’t know much on the topic.’ After hearing this, the interviewer asks another question, what if you don’t know the answer to this question also and the same situation follows for a 3rd question in a row to which you do not know the answer or response. In such a difficult situation, do not panic. You must be able to handle yourself by making the situation a little lighter. Here are a few ways to deal with this situation as per Raj sir.
- Remaining completely honest, do not fabricate responses, the interviewers will see that you are bluffing and not take it as a good sign.
- When stating that you don’t know the answer to the second question also, remain calm and respectful.
- When you don’t know the answers to 3 questions in a row, it is recommended to make the setting light by being honest that you were not able to answer the first two questions, you don’t know how to deal with the 3rd.
- Not knowing enough about certain topics is ok as long as the interviews are able to understand you and remain neutral with your answers.
- Your honesty may bring luck such that the interviewers may ask you only ‘what kind of topics are you expecting, or what do you know most about’ or ‘what should we talk about’.
- It is important that you reply carefully to whatever topic you give them, they will ask deep and intellectual questions from that topic to check if you are committed to what you know.
- The problem arises when you are not able to answer the direct interview questions, and even those questions which you choose to answer, in such a scenario, the interviews may easily realize that you are not committed to yourself or the interview process, as a result, you will not be selected.
- Don’t try to state a topic which is complex and you don’t know about it only to impress the panel or saying that you read a lot about certain topics when you know less than 0.5% about it. These are dishonest PI techniques one must avoid.
- Only mention those topics which you want to talk about in reality and which you can talk about. Don’t try to cover anything else. You must be aware of your thoughts and knowledge capacity before answering any question.
Is It True that One Bad Answer Equals Rejection?
No, it is not true that one bad answer will lead to rejection. It is more about your honesty during the interview process and your commitment towards your goals. Not one, not two but more bad answers in an interview does not mean you will get rejected. You need to be more responsible when dealing with your messed up questions. How to handle such mess ups responsibly? It is done by taking ownership, being honest about your feelings and expressing your anguish emotionally.
Do not cry or lose your balance in front of the interviewers. Hold back your deeper emotions for later. In the current moment, get a hold of how bad the room reads, and make a lasting impression by stating what you feel with utmost honesty and sincerity. Remain as confident as you were when you had not answered a single bad answer. Here are the tips to deal with one or more bad answers and avoid rejection.
- Start by addressing the situation with honesty, stating that ‘I accept that I have made a blunder on this interview or have failed to provide the right answer to these questions, I am really sorry.’
- You may state a better outcome next time by saying something like, I believe I have not performed very well, but I promise you that the confidence you have shown in me, this year or next year, I will definitely prove it right.
- Own the situation, accept it, be happy about it. Know that your bad answers do not lead to your rejection. Interviewers assess the overall personality of a candidate and what they exhibit rather than one or two bad answers.
Can I Know How My Interview Is From My Interviewers’ Mood?
No, based on how your interview appears on the surface level or the face level, you cannot judge the outcome of your interview. Typically, students consider a cold expression of the interviewer to mean that the interview is not going well. Likewise, if the interviewer appears rude or there is a stressful situation in the interview, one may assume their interview is not going right. Raj sir argues that students must not judge the condition of their interview by reading the interviewer’s expression or the room.
As per Raj Sir, each question that comes in an interview must be dealt with a fresh energy and enthusiasm. It is most important to address each question with care and respect rather than resentment. No matter what background you are from, you must have the same level of understanding for the interview process as a fresher. To the interviewer, do not show how smart you are. The panel is already smart and may result in an ego clash. Instead, you must show them how good of a person you are.
- Don’t assume the whole interview process has gone bad because of one or two bad answers.
- Maybe the third question will be easy to answer and you will get a chance to prove your worth.
- At the end of the day, no matter how bad you are feeling, you must remain positive and accept your failures.
- Your honesty is more important than your ability to impress the interviewers.
