The Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is a national-level exam conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay for admission to Master of Design (M.Des) and Ph.D. in Design programs. CEED scores are accepted by premier design institute like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IITDM Jabalpur and several other topn design schools.

While CEED primarily facilitates M.Des admissions in IITs, various private design colleges and universities also consider CEED scores for their PG design courses, such as MIT Institute of Design Pune, ISDI Mumbai, UPES Dehradun, and Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology.

In terms of placements, CEED qualified candidates from IITs are often recruited by top companies in product design, UX/UI, industrial design, and visual communication sectors. Major recruiters include Tata Elxsi, Samsung, Microsoft, Infosys, IBM Design, Flipkart, Amazon, and TCS. The salary packages ranges from Rs. 8-20 LPA, depending on the specailization and institute. The fee structure for M.Des program varies across institutes, IIT Bombay fee structure ranges between Rs. 2-3 lakhs per year; IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Guwahati fee structure ranges between Rs. 1.5-2.5 lakhs per year, and private institutes fee structure ranges between Rs. 3-6 lakhs per year.

CEED Entrance Exam—Eligibility Criteria

Here’s what you need to know about the eligibility requirements for CEED entrance exam:

  • Candidates must have completed a graduate degree/diploma/postgraduate degree program of a minimum 3 years (after 10+2 level).
  • Candidates who are in final year (by July 2025) are also eligible to apply for CEED entrance exam.
  • Candidates who have completed GD Arts Diploma program by July 2025 are also eligible to apply.
  • As per the instructions given by IIT Bombay, there is no age limit to appear for CEED exam. Also, a candidate can appear for CEED entrance exam any number of times.
  • The eligibility criteria for admission to various institutes may differ from those for CEED exam. Before applying for CEED, candidates must check whether they meet the required eligibility criteria for admission to various institutes.

CEED Campus-Wise Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria for each participating institute may have some specific requirements. Here’s a detailed breakdown of campus-wise eligibility:

CEED Entrance Exam—Registration Process

The registration process for CEED exam is straightforward but requires careful attention. Below are the steps to ensure a smooth registration process for CEED:

  1. CEED registration form must be submitted online only through the official website www.ceed.iitb.ac.in
  2. The registration fee is as follows:
  • For women candidates – Rs. 2,000/-
  • For SC/ST/Pwd – Rs. 2,000/-
  • For all other candidates – Rs. 4,000/-

Note that this registration fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

  1. Fill in your personal details, academic information, and other required details correctly. The documents required to be uploaded are as follows:
  • Colored photograph and scanned copy of signature.
  • Scanned copy of your degree/diploma certificate.
  • Category certificate (if applicable).
  • PwD certificate (if applicable).
  • CEED Merit List (Rank) will be prepared as per the category provided by the candidate in the CEED registration form. Hence, it is the responsibility of the candidate to furnish the correct category certificate in the online registration form. 
  • Registration forms, incomplete in any respect, will be summarily rejected, and the registration will be considered invalid.

CEED Exam Pattern & Syllabus

The CEED entrance exam evaluates candidate’s aptitude, creativity, desig thinking, visual perception, and probel-solving abilities. The CEED exam is structured in two parts: Part A (Objective) and Part B (Subjective). Both sections are designed to evaluate different skills sets. Here’s an overview of CEED exam pattern:

CEED Exam Pattern—Part A

  1. Part-A (Total marks: 150; Maximum time: 1 hour): This part will be administered through a computer-based test and consist of three sections. 
  1. Section 1: NAT (Numerical Answer Type): 8 questions (4 marks each; no negative marks). For these questions, the answer is a number that needs to be entered using a virtual keyboard on the computer screen. No choices will be shown for these questions. 
  1. Section 2: MSQ (Multiple Select Question): 10 questions. Each MSQ may have one or more than one correct choice(s) out of the four given.  
  1. Section 3: MCQ (Multiple Choice Question): 26 questions (3 marks each for the correct answer; 0.5 negative marks for an incorrect answer). Each MCQ will have four choices, of which only one is the correct answer.

CEED Exam Pattern—Part B

  1. Part B (Total marks: 100; Maximum time: 2 hours): Part-B consists of five questions to test design, drawing and writing skills. The questions in Part-B will be displayed on the computer screen, and the answers should be written in the answer book provided by the invigilator (NOT into the Computer).
  2. However, you need to tick the appropriate box on the computer screen to indicate that you have answered the same. In the case of PwD candidates availing the use of a scribe, assistance in attempting Part-B is not permitted, as the question is aimed at evaluating their drawing skill. 
  • Part-B answer booklets will be collected at the end of the examination. 
  • Part-B questions are mandatory. 
  • The entire paper (Part-A and Part-B) must be finished within the stipulated time for each part.

CEED Syllabus (Part-Wise)

CEED entrance exam consists of two parts (A & B). 

Part A will have questions related to the following topics:

  • Visualization and spatial reasoning: Ability to visualise and transform 2D shapes and 3D objects and their spatial relationships. 
  • Practical and scientific knowledge: Know-how of scientific principles and everyday objects. 
  • Observation and design sensitivity: The capacity to detect concealed properties in daily life and think critically about them. Attention to detail, classification, analysis, inference, and prediction. 
  • Environment and society: General awareness of environmental, social and cultural connections with design. 
  • Analytical and logical reasoning: Ability to analyse qualitative and quantitative information. 
  • Language: Proficiency in reading and comprehending Standard English. 
  • Creativity: Grasp of verbal and non-verbal analogies, metaphors, signs, and symbols.
  • Art and Design knowledge: Awareness about art/artifact/product, artists/designers, art/design history, and trends. 
  • Design methods and practices: Knowledge of media, materials, production processes, and ergonomics. 

Part B CEED Syllabus will have questions related to following topics:

  • Drawing: Ability to draw products, people or scenes in proportion with good line quality, composition, proportion, perspective, and shading.
