NMC Stops All New Medical Colleges Approval

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has stopped the approval for new medical colleges, an increase in seats, and a renewal of the existing number of seats for the AY 2025-26. This decision was made in response to fraudulent activities involving the acceptance of bribes in exchange for favourable assessment reports of medical colleges.

According to CBI reports, bribes were accepted in exchange for submitting favourable inspection reports for several medical colleges that lacked qualified faculty, proper infrastructure, and adequate healthcare facilities. In response, NMC has made it clear that no corruption will be tolerated. Strict action will be taken against all such incidents as per the provisions of the NMC Act and regulations. CBI has conducted searches at over 40 medical colleges in India.

According to the media reports, various institutions have gained approval from the NMC by giving bribes to their officials and manipulating regulatory rules. Till now, 36 people have been arrested, and the list comprises 11 individuals from the central and health departments. Three doctors linked to this fraudulent case have also been arrested by the CBI. The fraud is anticipated to be more than Rs 1,000 crore.

Response by NMC

As per the press release, the NMC will assign senior faculty members from various government medical colleges across the country to perform periodic inspections in medical institutions. They have warned all the medical colleges/stakeholders to strictly follow the NMC Rules and Regulations and maintain the quality of medical education, professionalism and public trust.

In May 2025, the CBI reported the arrest of a Senior doctor serving as an Assessor with the NMC for accepting a bribe of Rs 10 Lakhs in return for issuing a favourable assessment report to a private medical college in Karnataka. CBI filed an FIR against assessors, authorities of the college, and unknown individuals linked to this case. Addressing the matter, NMC has decided to blacklist the said Assessor and has halted the renewal of an existing number of seats of the said college in Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses for the AY 2025-26. Furthermore, any application submitted to the  Medical Assessment & Rating Board for the increase of seats and introduction of new courses for both UG & PG for AY 2025-26 will be cancelled.
