IPMAT 2026 Interview Preparation Strategy
The IPMAT interview is something most students either overthink or completely ignore. Once you clear the aptitude test, this is the round that actually decides whether your name makes it to the final merit list. IIM Indore gives it 35 percent weightage; IIM Shillong gives it 50 percent, so this is not a stage you can afford to take lightly. The panel is not looking for someone with rehearsed answers. They want to see a real person who knows why they are sitting in that chair. Start by knowing yourself well because almost every interview begins with who you are, where you are from, what you studied, and what you like doing outside academics. If you fumble on something that personal, it sets a bad tone for everything that follows.
Keep up with current affairs and general knowledge as a regular habit and not as something you cram the night before. Research the specific college you are interviewing for because the panel notices when someone has made the effort to understand the course and the institution. Dress appropriately, arrive on time, carry your documents and greet every person in the room when you walk in.
The whole interview is less about testing what you know and more about seeing how you carry yourself under a little pressure and whether you are someone worth investing five years in. If you prepare with that in mind, you will walk out of that room feeling a lot more confident than most people who went in before you.

General Male PCM student preparing for JEE
I joined the meeting; it started at 12:24 (scheduled for 12:30, 3 Aug, 2022)
The panel consisted of 2 interviewers, one male (M) and one female (F)
After greetings, the questions started
F went first
F: So, Samrath, what subjects did you have in +2?
Me: said PCM
F: What got you interested in IPM?
Me: Ma'am I had been preparing for JEE for two years, for I wanted to pursue entrepreneurship, and IITs are the best for entrepreneurship at the undergraduate level, I got to know about IPM in class 12, so I decided to apply
F: So did you take engineering because you wanted to be an engineer or because you liked physics and maths?
Me: Ma'am I took PCM because I liked maths and physics
F: Samrath what is going on in Chennai?
Me: Ma'am I am not aware
F: OK, you are from Delhi, right? What cities are in NCR?
Me: Ma'am New Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida (I later realised Gurgaon has been renamed to Gurugram, but the damage had been done)
F: can you tell me a recent news about Indira Gandhi Airport?
Me: (Earlier that morning my mother had shown me a reel about an airplane almost running over a taxi near the airstrip at IG airport, that's what I said)
F: Samrath, Delhi is also known for good things
Everyone laughs
F: Samrath how many states and union territories are there in India?
(At this point I cursed myself for not knowing basic facts, but I couldn't say I didn't know, so I decided to guess it)
Me: Ma'am there are 29 states and 8 union territories
F: Samrath you mentioned that you were interested in entrepreneurship, can you name some entrepreneurs?
(Under normal circumstances I would have named a dozen in one breath, but my brain had stopped working, so after thinking for a few seconds, I responded)
Me: Ma'am Vijay Shekhar Sharma from Paytm
F: Is he the founder?
Me: as far as I know
F: can you name another one?
Me(after thinking for 10s): Sachin and Binni Bansal from Flipkart
F: What happened to flipkart? Were they acquired?
Me: Yes ma'am they were acquired by Walmart
F: Were they acquired or was it a merger?
Me: Ma'am I don't know
F: Do you know the difference between acquisition and merger?
Me: No ma'am
(I did know the difference, but my mind was blank)
F: So why have Air India and Tata been in the news recently?
Me: Ma'am Air India was privatized by the Indian Government and Tata bought it
F: So it was an acquisition
Me: Yes ma'am
F: Samrath that's all from my side, maybe sir wants to ask you some questions
(For some context, I used to compete in speedcubing competitions from 2017–2019, which was put on hold due to Covid, I had no medals, being from Delhi where the fastest cubers in India are from)
M: Samrath what is a Professor's cube?
(I misheard him and thought he was saying ‘tube', which I assumed was an apparatus in an experiment, and I hadn't read the physics NCERT at all)
Me: Sir I don't know
M: Your application says you are interested in Rubik's cubes and you don't know what Professor's cube is?
Me: Sorry sir I misheard you, a professors cube was the name Rubik's gave to its first 5x5 cube
M: then what was the Rubik's revenge?
Me: sir it was the name for Rubik's first 4x4
M: so why is the 5x5 named professor's cube?
Me: sir I don't know, I don't like Rubik's very much
M: why?
Me: Sir Rubik's isn't a well respected company in the competitive scene, primarily because they tried to stifle other manufacturers by claiming they had a supposed “copyright” over the entire genre of 3D puzzles
M: Samrath can you calculate the number of possible permutations for a 5x5?
(Now I had tried to calculate this answer for 3x3 many years ago, I knew i wasn't expected to give the right answer, they wanted to know my thought process)
So I started calculating with corners, explains different types of pieces on a 5x5 and various parities along the way
I was about half way through when he asked me to stop
M: Samrath which subject are you more comfortable with, physics or chemistry?
Me: sir, physics
M: which part of physics?
Me: classical mechanics
M: what is the Archimedes principle?
Me: (told)
M: can you give me a mathematical expression?
Me: (gave F=dV, by then realised I missed g, and rectified it)
M: thank you Samrath, we will end it here
I scored well in written test (263/360), and it has 65% weightage, which should help, as my interview was terrible
I don't think I will make it.
