IIMB Application Process for 2-Year Full-Time MBA Admissions

IIM Bangalore will commence its online admission process for the PGP programme by asking the candidates to submit the application form. The detailed information about how the IIM Bangalore Selection Criteria works here has been described below for better understanding.

IIM Bangalore: Stage 1 Application Procedure

  • IIM Bangalore firstly shortlists all the candidates who have obtained a minimum of pre-determined score in all the sections of the CAT 2026 exam.
  • Only those candidates who obtain a minimum raw score that’s positive across all the three sections of the CAT 2026 will make it to the next stage.
  • Any type of standardization, upcoming proceedings and further selections are only applicable to the candidates in the first shortlist.
  • A pre-PI score is generated for the shortlisted candidates. It comprises a total of 6 different components and weighs only 100 points. Check the component-wise distribution below for the IIM Bangalore pre-PI score calculation.
IIM Bangalore Selection Criteria (Pre-PI Stage)Weightage
CAT Score 55 Points
10th Board Score 10  Points
Class 12th Examination Score 10  Points
Bachelor’s Score10  Points
Work Experience or Professional Course10  Points
Gender Diversity 5  Points
Total 100 Points
  • The CAT exam score holds the highest weightage in calculating the pre-PI score. It’s divided across Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning.
CAT Exam Section Weightage
VARC19 Points
DILR21 Points
QA15 Points
Total 55 Points
  • IIM Bangalore will use the Gender Diversity points only during the pre-PI score calculation. It will not be used in the upcoming stages.
  • In this process, IIMB will also standardize your 10th and 12th grade examination scores.
  • Candidates with no class 10th and 12th grade scores (due to COVID) will get no weightage across those components. In this case, the weightage allocated to the other components will be readjusted.
  • Next, IIM Bangalore also follows the score standardization procedure for the bachelor’s degree.
  • Any kind of incomplete or intermediate graduate scores will be considerate only if your undergraduate degree score is pending by your university.
  • Similarly, candidates with no bachelor’s degree (due to COVID 19) will get no weightage for this particular component. Instead, the weights assigned to the other components will be readjusted further.
  • As per the IIM Bangalore Selection Criteria, candidates who have completed a professional degree like Chartered Accountancy (CA), Cost Accounting (ICWA), or Company Secretary (CS) certifications are eligible to receive weightage within the category of a professional course.
  • Here also, IIM Bangalore will standardize the scores obtained in the professional courses to calculate the weightage.
  • The formula to calculate the pre-PI score for work experience followed IIM Bangalore is mentioned below:
Pre-PI Calculation: Standard Formula
= 10x/36 if 0 < x < 36
= 10 if x >= 36

Here,

  • X = total months of work experience. IIM Bangalore will accept work experience from the candidates only till July 2026.
  • According to the IIM Bangalore Selection Criteria, any kind of special consideration will not be given to the candidates with an internship experience, apprenticeship (completed during a professional course) or unpaid work from any organization.
  • If you have pursued a professional course addressed above like (CA / ICWA / CS) and have prior work experience too then IIM Bangalore will consider the maximum of your professional degree score and work experience score.
  • A standard formula: Max [0, min {wt, wt/2 + ((val-mean) / sd) * wt / 6}] will be used to calculate the standardized score of every single candidate. IIM Bangalore uses this formula to ensure that the final standardized score ranges between 0 and the weight (wt) allocated to the particular component for the PI round selection.
  • The top 10 candidates from every category will automatically qualify for the PI round: professional degree score (CA / ICWA / CS), total CAT 2026 score and adjusted undergraduate degree score (commerce, arts, and science disciplines) respectively.
  • After the PI round is over, all the candidates are assessed on a similar pattern without any major difference.
  • Any candidate who is found sharing false work experience will not be considered for the PGP admissions at IIM Bangalore.
  • In such circumstances, the candidate will also be barred from applying at any IIMB course for a minimum period of 3 years.
Important Note: A selected number of candidates from every category will be shortlisted to move towards the next stage of the IIMB MBA admission according to their pre-PI score.

IIM Bangalore: Stage 2 Application Procedure

The IIM Bangalore Selection Criteria also comprises a Personal Interview (PI) round along with a Written Ability Test (WAT). Key pointers about these two interesting selection rounds for an MBA programme are as follows:

  • The WAT and PI round will take place at a similar location on a particular day.
  • Shortlisted candidates will have to write a note in a span of 30 minutes.
  • IIMB will evaluate the candidates on the type of content and the style of their note.

Significant Changes in the Work Experience Score Breakdown

Every year, the weight of the past work experience undergoes a significant change in the Post-PI shortlisting stage. Important details that you must know are mentioned below:

  • Initially, the entire Pre-PI work experience is calculated out of 10. Later on, the score is scaled down from 10 to 5. This happens at the time of the post PI process to derive a composite score.
  • Your work experience will also be multiplied by the overall quality of experience score. At this point, a dedicated interview panel will evaluate the candidate on a 5 point scale (0.25,0.5,1,1.5,2)
  • Your average quality score will eventually be multiplied by the pre-PI work experience score. Lastly, the revised score is added up to the post PI composite score.
