There are over 8,876 engineering colleges in India total, out of which of around 2,265 of them are government institutions and 6,611 are private engineering colleges. The total number of engineering institutes offering B.Tech is 4,359 and that of M.Tech is 2,861. To begin with somr interesting facts, there were a total of 36 engineering colleges in India before independence which are still among the most prominent list. A few of them are.

  • College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG), Chennai: Established in 1794 as a School of Survey. It is the oldest technical institution in India and Asia. 
  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee: Originally established as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1847. 
  • College of Engineering, Pune: Established in 1854 and is the third oldest engineering college in India.
  • Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur: Established in 1856 as Bengal Engineering College. 
  • Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai: Established in 1887 as the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute.
  • National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna: Established in 1886 as Bihar School of Engineering.
  • Jadavpur University, Kolkata: Established in 1906. 
  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore: Established in May 27, 1909. 
  • University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), Bangalore: Established in 1917. 
  • Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI), Kanpur: Established in 1921 and is India’s first technological institute for higher research in technical chemistry.
  • Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad: Established in December 9, 1926.
