IIM Amritsar Admission Offer Chaos
- Wrong offer letters were sent to certain candidates for the MBA
- Offers for MBA-BA and MBA-HR are stated to be unaffected.
- IIM Amritsar has promised an immediate refund of any acceptance fee paid.
- If applicable, affected candidates will be reconsidered in subsequent admission rounds.
The Controversial Email from IIM AmritsarÂ
The follow-up email, carrying the subject line “Withdrawal of Admission Offer Issued Due to Technical Glitch – IIM Amritsar”, informed the converted candidates that their offer had been issued in error due to a fault in the admission portal and would stand cancelled with immediate effect.
IIM Amritsar Admissions 2026: Official AnnouncementÂ
The email goes as:
“This is to inform you that, due to an inadvertent technical glitch in the admission portal, an incorrect admission offer for the MBA programme was issued to you. Upon verification, it has been found that the said offer was generated in error and does not constitute a valid admission offer under the Institute’s approved admission process. Accordingly, the admission offer made to you stands withdrawn… If you have paid the acceptance fee, the same will be refunded immediately.”
The email further clarified:
- Any offers made separately for the MBA-BA and MBA-HR specialisations would remain unaffected
- Affected candidates would be reconsidered for admission in subsequent rounds, if any, as per the institute’s approved merit criteria.
The Overview of What Happened: IIM Amritsar
Qualified candidates received the offer letters via email. The deadline for paying the acceptance fee is typically five to ten days from the date of the offer.
The problem is said to have occurred in the institute’s admission portal. It generated offer letters for certain candidates who, upon verification, were found to be outside the merit-based selection criteria as per the institute’s approved admission policy. The institute claims the entire incident to be a technical glitch and has stated that the offers do not constitute valid admissions.
What Was The Bigger Problem?
Timing is the big issue here. The cancellation email arrived roughly two days after the initial offer. It was enough of a window in which many affected students had already made the decisions.
There is a high probability that many students might have already paid the acceptance fee and, critically, withdrawn from or declined offers at other institutions. For MBA aspirants, the weeks following results are extraordinarily high-stakes. The common admission season runs on tight deadlines every IIM and major B-school sets firm cutoffs for fee payment and seat confirmation, often running simultaneously.Â
Many of the affected candidates paid the acceptance fee to IIM Amritsar. Some may have declined parallel offers at other colleges. Some may have already informed about their withdrawal to other institutions, thus omitting the options permanently. Now, they find themselves without a confirmed seat. It takes them outside the admission window of alternative institutes, with their IIM Amritsar offer revoked.
IIM Amritsar’s Present ScenarioÂ
To the institute’s credit, IIM Amritsar acknowledged the error clearly, and committed to a full refund of any acceptance fee paid. The institute has also stated that affected candidates’ profiles will be reviewed in subsequent rounds of admission under the approved merit criteria though the email stops short of guaranteeing re-admission, using the careful qualifier “if any” when referring to subsequent rounds.
What Should Affected Students Do?
Track your refund: IIM Amritsar has committed to refunding the acceptance fee immediately. Therefore, keep checking your bank account, and if the refund is not credited, contact the IIM Amritsar admissions office.
Contact other applied institutes right away: If you declined or did not respond to offers from other B-schools, write to those institutes immediately. Explain the situation with supporting documentation if you are among the affected.
Check for open waitlists: Waitlist movements for the current cycle are active at many IIMs and top B-schools through May and June. Keep a close watch on portals and email communications.
Final Words
For now, the affected candidates are waiting. What is clear is that IIM Amritsar owes it to these students to go beyond a refund, to actively facilitate their admission wherever possible, whether through an additional round within the current cycle or by facilitating transfers under the CAP framework. The error was institutional; the responsibility to make it right is institutional too.
For the thousands of MBA aspirants who go through the gruelling CAT-to-interview pipeline every year, an admission offer from an IIM is not just a letter; it is a commitment. And when institutions issue offers, even in error, students will act on them. That is the reasonable thing to do. The reasonable response, in turn, is to ensure no student is left worse off for having trusted the process.
