When Should Pre-Final Year Students Start CAT 2027 Preparation?

We are currently in May 2026, so you have 10 to 18 months for CAT 2027. Now, what should you be doing about this? Should you start preparation now? Say it in June when you enter the pre-final year. The most important thing is that you should start preparing for the CAT when you enter the pre-final year. In this article, we will talk about the preparation timelines for college-going students, working professionals, and so on. This applies to:

  • B.Com students entering the second year
  • BBA students entering the second year
  • BMS students entering their second year
  • Engineering students entering their third year

So, depending on whether you’re in a four-year or a three-year course, if you’re entering the pre-final year, it is a perfect time to start CAT 2027 preparation. Many students will see around them that several aspirants are still starting to prepare for CAT 2026. So, it is quite normal to ask why I should start preparing for CAT 2027 so early.

The 18-Month Advantage for CAT 2027: Breaks, Exams & Recovery Time

Well, let’s discuss what happens throughout your whole journey of around 18 months. So, when you look at this whole journey of 18 months of CAT 2027 preparation, the biggest advantage you have is that when you start early, you have a lot of time to come back.

When you start early, you have your whole 1 and 1/2 year plan. You will also have your semester exams during this period. If you start college in June during your pre-final year, you will probably have semester exams in October or November 2026. If you are doing B.Com, BBA, or BMS, these exams will usually be your third-semester exams. If you are an engineering student, they will usually be your fifth-semester exams. This advice is not limited to pre-final-year students. Even third-year students targeting CAT 2027 can benefit from starting early.

After that, you will have another round of semester exams in March or April 2027. The biggest advantage of beginning CAT 2027 preparation early is that you can take enough breaks for these exams. When you start preparing for the CAT early, you have enough time to plan both things well. Your college studies and CAT2027 preparation can be planned really well.

QA Basics: Arithmetic, Geometry & Number System for CAT

Now, what does CAT preparation do? What happens when you start so early? Many students are scared of Maths. Some of them have not studied Maths after Class 10. Because of that, they often feel worried when they see Maths questions. Many students have a fear of Maths.

For engineers, the problem is a little different. Many of them feel they are good at Maths. But in exams like CAT, getting the right method and using shortcuts is very important. Because of this, even engineers sometimes make mistakes while solving questions.

When you start early, you have the advantage that you can cover all your basics really well. If you start around June 2026, you will have enough time to cover all your basics for CAT 2027. Around one and a half to two months can be spent on Module Zero. At iQuanta, this is called the Non-Engineers QA Module. It basically covers everything from the Class 8 to Class 10 NCERT/CBSE syllabus. It covers all those areas which you require in CAT. Topics that are not needed for CAT are left out.

Many students are advised to study the Class 8, 9, and 10 textbooks. However, those books also contain many topics that are not asked in the CAT. In this module, the required topics are already selected and arranged in a proper order.

The first one and a half to two months can be used to revise basic concepts. Topics such as percentages, ratios, profit and loss, simple interest, compound interest, and the whole arithmetic module are very important.

Number System is also an important area. Topics such as real numbers, imaginary numbers, rational numbers, and irrational numbers are often forgotten after school. Knowing all these properties can be helpful. If you know them even before your actual CAT 2027 class starts, it can be huge for you. Your learning will be huge.

Geometry Deserves Special Attention

Geometry is one area where doing well can help in the CAT 2027. One reason is that the CAT exam usually has four to five questions from Geometry. Another reason is that Geometry is a huge conceptual area and often takes more time to revise than many other areas.

To do well in geometry, you need to know all properties. Most students remember the Pythagoreas Theorem. However, many forget concepts such as the Apollonius Theorem, similarity properties, the midpoint theorem, and other rules.

When there is enough time for preparation, you can easily study these topics with a lot of examples and videos. This helps you build a better understanding of Geometry before the exam.

So, once you start and then once your class starts, your class will be starting about somewhere in June, you know. So, all those who are even vaguely interested can just join the iQuanta WhatsApp link as a simple first step. You will see questions shared every day, along with updates and discussions. You can also learn how seniors prepared for CAT and later made it to an IIM.

CAT Is Not the Only Exam You Should Think About

Not saying you should only focus on the IIMs. You need to look at the whole picture. You have to think that CAT will be written, XAT will be written, and many other exams will also be written. And the goal is to do well in all of them. If you start early, chances of doing well are always better. Because if you start late, there will be more things to handle.

Why CAT Often Gets Postponed When You Start Late

Like you have college studies, maybe you have a sport you are good at or some cultural activity in college. Then what happens is, the thing you usually delay becomes CAT. Because everything else cannot be delayed. College studies cannot be delayed. You cannot fail in college and do CAT, because then there is no point. In the same way, sports or cultural activities also cannot be ignored.

So CAT usually gets pushed to the side. When you start early, all of this becomes much easier to manage. You are able to take breaks for everything. That is the main advantage of starting early. You get enough time for breaks. Classes are also fewer times a week, so it becomes easier to manage things. That is the biggest reason to start early.

How to Manage LRDI As a Beginner?

Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation is completely new for everybody. Whether you are an engineer, a commerce student or a medical student. So, it takes some time in the beginning to just get used to it. Students usually take around a month or one and a half months to get comfortable with Logical Reasoning. That can really make a difference.

Also,  in one of the classes, students were asked: “How many people have played Sudoku earlier?” And there were a good 30-40% people who never played Sudoku. If you are one of them, then you will be told that you should start playing Sudoku and maybe even chess or similar games.

Again, sometimes there is an advantage depending on what you have already done or learned. So, for example, if you look at a set in logical reasoning and data interpretation, there could be a set on tournaments. And the tournament structure can be very similar to how the English Premier League works.

Say, two or four points for a win and two points for a draw, then there is goal difference, all those things. For people who understand that, it becomes very easy. That’s like a round-robin tournament where everybody’s playing everybody, maybe twice or whatever. And then there is the other type of tournaments like which will be the Wimbledon and the French Open, the tennis tournaments which are completely knockout tournaments. In the first round, there are 64 people, so 32 matches, and it keeps going like that. So, those types of advantages you can have if you start early, you’re told by your mentors, “Okay, start following this sport, start following these things.” That becomes a major advantage. So, once you’re in the pre-final year and your college starts, start thinking about CAT coaching also. Or at least start thinking about CAT preparation.

Can You Prepare Through YouTube Alone?

A lot of people have a feeling nowadays that they can start preparing through YouTube. Yes, there are a lot of videos on YouTube.  iQuanta also have many free videos on their channel. But what YouTube lacks is structure.

Sometimes you might see a video made for CAT 2026 students, and that might be a much higher level, and you will suddenly feel lost. So all those things become very important.

Why a Structured Study Plan Matters in CAT 2027 Preparation?

Is there a proper structure? That structure is what is missing in YouTube. That is why the advantage of going to a coaching like iQuanta is that you get a clear structure for your studies. You know what to study first, what to study next, and so on.

At iQuanta, it is divided in a proper way. First is the Non-Engineers QA module, and similarly, LRDI Essentials. This becomes the base for both these sections. For VARC, also, a video is already there, and you can watch it if you have not seen it.

After the basics, you move to live classes. After that, there are application classes. Then comes practice, assignments, and practice exercises, all with video solutions. Then it continues with mocks, and you just keep taking them.

With this process, by the time you reach CAT 2027, which is around 18 months away, it feels like just another normal day of preparation. It does not feel special or scary, so you are not nervous.

The advantage of starting early is huge. Also, sometimes many students miss their CAT preparation due to medical reasons, personal issues, or family functions. They may lose 15-20 days.

If someone starts only 6-8 months before the exam, losing that much time becomes a big problem. But with 18 months in hand, it is much easier. Even if you take a 10-15-day break, there is no worry, because you can always come back, revise, and continue your routine.

How Much Should You Study Daily?

So, even if it is around 18 months in advance for CAT 2027, giving around 1 to 1.5 hours every day to CAT preparation should be good enough. When preparation starts around 12 months in advance, two to three LRDI sets per day are usually suggested. At 8-10 months, it becomes around three to four LRDI sets per day.

For you, it can start with one or sometimes even two LRDI sets a day. A simple set, one set, around 15 minutes of LRDI per day, or two sets, should be enough. Along with that, solve 10-15 Maths questions, one small concept, and around 10 questions from that topic. All this can be done slowly and steadily over time. Especially for students who already have a lot of things on their plates.

CAT 2027 Strategy for Working Professionals

Now, let’s talk about a working professional. You have a good job, you are doing well in it, and you don’t want to leave it. At the same time, you also want to do an MBA because you want to grow in your career. But since the job is going fine, you don’t want to quit it.

So, how do you manage your job and CAT 2027 preparation together? Start a long-term batch. With a long-term batch, all your work pressure, travel due to work, coming home late, less time on weekdays, and more time on weekends, all of this can be managed in a better way.

Final Thoughts: Is Now the Right Time to Start CAT 2027 Preparation?

So, let’s cut it short. Joining a batch 18 months in advance is the best option. June or July is the perfect time to start. If you start in June or July, it becomes the right batch in terms of how much effort you need to give every day. That changes a lot, and it becomes quite manageable.
